Scarlet Pride

The Official Blog for Rutgers Alumni

Rutgers ClubTucked down at the end of College Avenue in New Brunswick, just past Alexander Library, is The Rutgers Club, a private, collegiate restaurant and lounge open to all alumni, faculty, staff, students, and friends of Rutgers University.

Upon opening the scarlet door, the Scarlet Knight stands at attention to greet patrons, and the dark red carpeting and curtains remind you of the deeply rooted Rutgers legacy and history that lie within. The house was built in 1915 and privately owned until 1956, when it was sold and became The Rutgers Club the next year.

The Rutgers Club is much more than a place for a meal when visiting campus. One of the club’s biggest attractions is its upscale cuisine at an affordable price. Three of the club’s chefs previously worked at the Frog and the Peach, one of New Brunswick’s most celebrated gourmet restaurants. And the club’s award-winning chef Peter Imranyi came in second place in the National Association of College and University Food Services National Cooking Competition, following a first-place win at the regional level.

“It’s such a nice and different dining option,” says Rutgers Club manager Ray Martin. “There are linen table clothes, it’s very Rutgers-esque, and it is the best place for an upscale meal at Rutgers.”

What many Rutgers alumni don’t realize is that the membership at The Rutgers Club allows them access to many other university clubs as well. The Association of College and University Clubs (ACUC) is a reciprocal organization, to which The Rutgers Club belongs, thus allowing members to reap the benefits at associated clubs throughout the United States as well as in Canada, Europe, and Australia. Visit the ACUC website to see the full list of participating university clubs.

The Rutgers Club yearly membership fee is $25. Membership runs from September to August, and individuals can sign up at rutgersclub.rutgers.edu/members. While anyone is welcome to dine at the club without joining, members enjoy a host of exclusive benefits that include bar service, room rentals (the club boasts seven private rooms available for parties and functions of various sizes), and affiliations.

The Rutgers Club also hosts special events and theme nights throughout the year for its members. Coming up is a holiday party and sing-along on Friday, December 9, and buffet lunches on Monday, December 12, through Thursday, December 15. Members who are interested are urged to make reservations in advance at 732-932-7139.
