History and Traditions
What does it mean to be scarlet forever? That is up to you. Your Rutgers connection is unique to you; it is a part of who you are and the role that you play in your professional life and beyond. Being scarlet forever means having a lifelong relationship with your alma mater in whatever way is meaningful for you. The RUAA can help nurture that relationship and can help you find new ways to get involved and show your pride.
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is the nation’s eighth-oldest institution of higher learning—one of only nine colonial colleges established before the American Revolution—and has a centuries-old tradition of rising to the challenges of each new generation.
The Rutgers Shield
The Rutgers shield is a fundamental expression of the university’s identity. Introduced in celebration of Rutgers’ 250th anniversary in 2016, the new shield—a simplified interpretation of its 1966 Rutgers bicentennial predecessor—honors our roots and affirms our values, while providing greater flexibility when used as 21st-century iconography in pageantry, publishing, and promotion.
Rutgers has a long and robust tradition of school songs
that dates to 1873. Hearing songs like “On the Banks of the Old Raritan” gives students, alumni, and fans a sense of pride, nostalgia, and reverence for “Dear Old Rutgers.”
