Congratulations on your recent graduation from Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey! You are now part of one of the largest alumni networks in the country—more than 360,000 strong!
In addition to being a Rutgers graduate, you are also an alumni association member. Normally, alumni pay annual dues to become alumni association members. But each association has waived this fee for new graduates to congratulate you and to wish you success in the future. Your free membership is good through June 30, 2008.
Because you have recently made the transition from Rutgers students to alumni, you might have a few questions about Rutgers’ alumni relations program. Below are answers to several frequently asked questions, and the links on the right will help you navigate through alumni.rutgers.edu, the website for all Rutgers alumni.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does it mean to be an alumni association member?
Alumni association members are ambassadors in the alumni community, part of the long tradition of alumni connecting with their alma mater and each other. In addition to this sense of Rutgers camaraderie and spirit, alumni association members receive a membership card; return address labels emblazoned with Rutgers Alumni logos; a subscription to the award-winning
Rutgers Magazine and other alumni communications; invitations to Rutgers Alumni events; and discounts on shopping, dining, entertainment, travel, and more. Visit
alumni.rutgers.edu/benefits for specific details.
Also, each alumni association is part of the Rutgers University Alumni Federation, which serves the university and its entire alumni community with a wide range of activities and programs. Visit alumni.rutgers.edu/federation to learn more about this organization.
What happens when my free membership expires?
When your free membership expires on June 30, 2008, we hope you will have already renewed your membership for the next year! The alumni associations collect annual dues in order to support the many diverse events, programs, and services that make it so exciting to be part of the Rutgers alumni community.
You will receive a letter and/or email in 2008 asking you to renew your membership. We hope that you will consider taking advantage of this opportunity to renew early, so that your membership never lapses. You can also renew online at alumni.rutgers.edu/renew.
While alumni are able to take advantage of many opportunities regardless of their membership status, being a dues-paying alumni association member is the easiest way to give back to your alma mater. It also guarantees that you will receive event invitations, Rutgers Magazine, and exclusive members-only discounts. Above all, alumni association dues are what make it possible for Rutgers to offer its alumni such great programming and services. So, please renew your membership when the time comes!
Email membership@alumni.rutgers.edu if you have specific questions about your membership or feedback about the alumni association membership program.
What are the benefits of alumni association membership?
The benefits and services available to Rutgers alumni are too robust to list them all here! Visit
alumni.rutgers.edu/benefits to learn about the benefits that are exclusive to alumni association members and those that are available to all Rutgers alumni.

I do not live near Rutgers. How can I stay connected to my alma mater and other alumni?
Rutgers has many regional clubs across the country, enabling alumni to feel close to Rutgers, regardless of distance. More than 175,000 Rutgers alumni have settled outside of New Jersey and are now scattered around the world. No matter where you live, you’re likely to find at least a few Rutgers grads living in your area!
Regional clubs organize social activities for all age groups. They are great for networking, and they keep alumni updated with news from the university. Also, clubs can assist in recruiting local high school students for Rutgers. Members attend college fairs as well as share information and stories about Rutgers with prospective students.
So, no matter how far away you are from New Jersey, you can still feel connected to Rutgers by being part of your local club. To see if there is a club in your area or for more information, visit alumni.rutgers.edu/clubs. No established club in your area? Email the Regional Clubs Office at regional@alumni.rutgers.edu to find out how you can help get one started.

alumni.rutgers.edu/career to find out more about the Alumni Career Network, employment fairs, career counseling, and more.

Does Rutgers provide email addresses for alumni?
Rutgers student email addresses remain active for one year following graduation. Visit Rutgers’ Office of Information of Technology website at
oit.rutgers.edu to find contact information for campus computing offices if you have further questions about student email addresses.
Alumni can register for a free permanent forwarding email address (username@alumni.rutgers.edu) once they register for the online community and click on “Email for Life” to activate the address.
Because the @alumni.rutgers.edu email address is a permanent forwarding address and not an email account, there is no actual Rutgers Alumni email account to “check.” All emails sent to your @alumni.rutgers.edu address will be forwarded to whatever personal email address (e.g., aol.com, yahoo.com, etc.) you set up in the “Email for Life” section of the online community. Therefore, you only check email at your personal email account.
The purpose of the forwarding email address is twofold: 1) You can show pride in being a Rutgers graduate by giving out this address to all your contacts, and 2) if you always give out your @alumni.rutgers.edu email address, you never have to inform all your contacts if you change your personal email address, you just have to update it in the “Email for Life” section of the online community.
How do I update my contact information?
Complete and submit the form at
alumni.rutgers.edu/update to update your contact information. This information will soon be reflected in the online alumni directory.
If you want the online alumni directory to reflect your new contact information immediately, you must log in to the online community and update it on your personal webpage. Log in at alumni.rutgers.edu/login, or register first at alumni.rutgers.edu/register. Once you are logged in, you can update your contact information and see your profile change right away.
How do I share my exciting news (new job, graduate school, marriage, etc.) with classmates and other Rutgers alumni?
Post your news to the Alumni eNotes section of the online community! Log in to the online community (visit alumni.rutgers.edu/register first if you are not already registered) and click on Alumni eNotes in the Shortcuts bar on the right. Then, you can post news about the professional accomplishments and personal milestones that you want to share with your classmates and other Rutgers alumni. You can also read others’ eNotes and sort them by school or college, class year, and type.
You can also submit your news at alumni.rutgers.edu/update or by emailing RUAlumni@alumni.rutgers.edu so that we may consider publishing your news in Rutgers Magazine’s Campus Notes section.
Stay connected by sharing your news!
Where can I get new Rutgers merchandise?
There are several Rutgers bookstores on the Camden, Newark, and New Brunswick campuses that have a lot of new Rutgers merchandise for sale. Often, the best selection is available in the stores, but there are also items available online at
shopscarlet.com and at the bookstores’ individual websites, which you can find at
alumni.rutgers.edu/bookstores.
Are discounted Rutgers sports tickets available to alumni?
Contact the Rutgers Ticket Office at 866-445-GORU (4678) or
tickets@scarletknights.com for information about tickets and discounts for young alumni and alumni association members. For more information, go to
scarletknights.com.
If you have any other questions, you can email RUAlumni@alumni.rutgers.edu and a staff member from the Department of Alumni Relations will respond to you personally. And, if you have comments or feedback about what you, as a new Rutgers graduate, want to experience as alumni, we would love to hear from you! Email RUAlumni@alumni.rutgers.edu to tell us what is on your mind.
